Before we initiated the product development process, we made an extensive list of functions we believed would be necessary for the SMX to achieve the same status with bike riders as the snowboard has with surfers and skateboarders. The following pages contain the most vital functions from this list, and explain how these functions actually work and why the Merc has become one of the most innovative sport products in the world.

Nearly all the functions on the North Legion SMX make it stand out from any other known product. The combination of these functions enables you to do everything you can do with a bmx or mountain bike and at the same time allows you to do smooth carving turns in the slopes and in the backcountry.

Suspension

The Merc is equipped with front suspension from Marzocchi and rear suspension from DNM. All front and rear shocks used by North Legion have proved to work well in low temperatures and exposed to snow over longer periods of time.

The SMX has been designed to allow for all type of mountain bike and bmx tricks. You can cruise down the slope and practice manuals, bunnyhops, 180s, switch riding (backwards) or barspins, or you can make use of the full suspension system and get your adrenalin rushing.

With full suspension and the stability of the 3-ski-design you can really go hard on big jumps and in the halfpipe. Foot pegs attached to the parallel motion frame makes it possible to control the SMX in the air and makes it possible to pull tricks when standing.

SAFE AND EASY TRANSPORT IN SKILIFTS

The smx’s frame design and a lift transportation device make transport in different types of ski lifts safer and more convenient than with any existing snowbikes or snowracers. It’s easy to handle without removing your gloves on cold days. A special lift transport device has been developed for use with button and t-bar lifts. The device is easy to attach and detach, and will automatically release if the rider looses control or falls off. In combination with the emergency stop function this solution gives perfect safety. The frame has been designed to fit perfectly with a variety of chairlifts, and a quick safety device can be attached to the safety bar.

STOPPING AND SAFETY

The 3-ski-design gives enormous stability, and testing has revealed that the North Legion SMX needs shorter distance to make a full stop compared with snowboard at various speeds. With an SMX, you stop the same way you do with alpine skis – and as effective.

If the rider looses control going down the slope, the emergency stop function will be activated which ensures that the SMX won’t become a potential hazard on the slope. The emergency stop function releases one of the rubber bands
